While Obsidian's next game may look like a third-person action game, it's still got quite a few RPG elements. As CIA agent Michael Thorton, you can accept quests, modify equipment, engage in branching conversations with NPCs, and employ special skills as you blast your way through the game in an attempt to untangle a high-level conspiracy.

From safe houses you'll be able to equip Michael with armaments like SMGs, shotguns, pistols, and more, as well as equip stealth, combat, and tech types of armor for different styles of play. You'll also be able to purchase items like flashbangs, shock traps, and incendiary bombs and accept quests in any order you like to ship out to a number of locales around the world.

As you move through the game you'll be able to upgrade your skills, letting you power up the different styles of play. If you go stealth, you'll spend more time behind cover, and it'd generally be a good idea to upgrade your close combat and pistol skills. When upgraded with a critical hit passive skill, you're able to increase the accuracy of a single pistol shot by hovering the targeting cursor over the target, which works well for picking off opponents unaware of your presence.

When enemies know you're around and start shooting, your combat skills can be useful for returning fire, especially if you have dual SMGs equipped. By using a bullet storm special ability, you'll briefly be awarded with unlimited ammunition to go on a limited tear, ideal for wiping out a larger group of foes. Then there's the tech approach, which allows you to hack into electrical equipment and use it to your advantage. During the demo we were given an example was given where Michael tapped into a missile battery, launched the warheads and watched them take out a few enemies where they hit.



In addition to the different types of play, Michael's options in conversation will reflect different moods, giving you the opportunity to role play a little as you deal with some of the game's personalities. There's a timer on the conversation option screen that counts down rather quickly, meaning you have to make your decision pretty quickly regarding whether you're going to get mad or even put a gun to the NPC's head.

The build at GC was certainly more impressive than what we saw at E3, as it was a lot smoother and polished. Alpha Protocol will contain somewhere around 20 hours of gameplay and is scheduled to ship sometime in February 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
