One of the most impressive games being shown at Square Enix's TGS booth this year is Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One for DS. Not a port of the original PlayStation role-playing title, this is a turn-based strategy game that has a pretty interesting approach to its battle mechanics.

The playing field is divided into tiles, as is to be expected. What is unique here is that when attacking, any adjacent characters will join in on the fun. This goes for characters adjacent to your current soldier or the attacked enemy. So everyone can attack many times within a turn. The system is similar to that of Disgaea but Valkyrie Profile takes it even further.

You only have four characters in your party, and each are mapped to one of the DS' face buttons. If all four have surrounded an enemy and one attacks, they can all get their hits in during the attack sequence -- each character only has a certain number of hits to deal out, though. Having multiple characters gang up on an enemy allows you to rack up huge combos. Occasionally you'll get the opportunity to perform a power move if you enter a button sequence correctly. These initiate an impressive sequence of over the top action.

Valkyrie Profile DS might be the next great SRPG from the house of Final Fantasy Tactics. The art style here is very similar, but the story appears to be quite a bit more mature than the last two Tactics games.
