Default Night Game

Nicalis will be delivering the beloved Cave Story to WiiWare sometime over the next couple months. But that's not the only project the developer has planned for Nintendo's downloadable service. Later in the year, gamers will be treated to the alluring Night Game, a physics-based 2D platformer. Set against a night sky, the foreground environments players traverse are a stark black. It's vaguely reminiscent of PixelJunk Eden but really stands out as a visually unique experience.

It's vaguely reminiscent of PixelJunk Eden but really stands out as a visually unique experience. Night Game was nominated for two Independent Game Festival Awards at GDC this year: Excellence in Design and Best Independent Game. It didn't win either, but it definitely deserves your attention.

Players control an orb with the simple objective of reaching the goal in each level. With the Wii remote held horizontally, pressing left and right on the D-pad will maneuver the orb around the screen. This isn't a side-scrolling game -- each level is divided into still screens and there are almost 400 screens making up the entire game. The primary game mechanic is the ability to change the properties of your orb with the 1 and 2 buttons. These abilities are context sensitive, but you might be able to increase its speed or give it more traction. By utilizing the different properties of your sphere you can overcome obstacles and cross the finish line. As a very basic gameplay example, there might be a pit that you can't cross with a lone tree growing at its edge. Gain enough speed and you can knock the tree over, creating a bridge for you to cross the chasm with. It sounds simple, but Nicalis showed us some later levels in the game that look like they'll provide insane, old school videogame challenges reminiscent of the NES days.

Sometimes there will be machines located on a screen that players can control with the A button. A vending machine might burp out blocks, for instance, that can be stacked in order to reach a high ledge.
