This sitcom follows the life of Ed Reardon, a curmudgeonly writer who has only managed to have one novel published since the 60s.

Despite his distinct lack of success, Ed remains bullishly optimistic about his future. Yes, he may only have a single pair of trousers and have one of the lowest sales ranks on Amazon, but no writer knows more about stealing stationery from their agent... as a freeloader Ed Reardon is the acknowledged king of his profession!

Regular characters joining Ed include Felix, the boss of Ed's publishers, Ping his '12 year-old' agent, the lively pensioners he teaches a screenwriting class to, and his old friend the irritatingly rich and successful movie director Jaz Milvane.

In recent series, Ed still finds himself battling through the week encountering the numerous '12-year-olds' who run the media (the young Alex now heading up the publishing company); teaching the lively bunch of pensioners who can show him a thing or two about moneymaking schemes, frugal living and having a good time; and
having regular run-ins with the rather successful Jaz, director of his only ever book-to-screen adaptation.

Series 1 (2005)

1. The Swim
First Broadcast: Fri 7th January 2005
Does it seem like the media is run by idiots, lying charlatans and moronic 12-year-olds? Welcome to the world of Ed Reardon.

2. Pulp Non-Fiction
First Broadcast: Fri 14th January 2005
Ed finds a review of his new book in the magazine Caravan and Camper. Rather than pay for photocopying, he steals the magazine from the library - an act that results in a jail sentence for the poor author.

3. Holby City
First Broadcast: Fri 21st January 2005
Ed is in desperate need of a new roof so his agent, Ping, gets him an interview to write for a TV hospital drama.

4. The Old Lock-Keeper
First Broadcast: Fri 28th January 2005
Ed's week is marred by the death of an old pal, deceptive junk mail and huge egos. But has Ed's big break finally come when he takes over The Old Lock-Keeper column?

5. The Winona Defence
First Broadcast: Fri 4th February 2005
Ed has fallen in love, but his cat proves to be an insurmountable obstacle to happy ever after.

6. King Of The Road
First Broadcast: Fri 11th February 2005
Ed's past is catching up with him, but it turns out to be an unexpected blessing. His career unexpectedly re-ignites after a faculty fracas with an old rival at a university.

Series 2 (2005)

1. Rogue Mail
First Broadcast: Wed 21st December 2005
Ed, having blown all his new-found wealth, is working at the post office to try and make ends meet. He's also has to teach his screenwriting course and work on a
boring book about stamps - thus leaving little time to sleep. Jaz, meanwhile, is making a fortune directing a credit card commercial.

2. The Speech
First Broadcast: Wed 28th December 2005
Ed attempts to finance his daughter's wedding and write a speech for a corrupt jockey. What could possibly go wrong?

3. The Last Laugh
First Broadcast: Wed 4th January 2006
The embittered writer contacts the bank when his finances tip into the abyss. Ed also engineers the break up of popular comedy writing duo Smith and Savage.

4. Our Man From Berkhamsted
First Broadcast: Wed 11th January 2006
The embittered writer rants about a literary festival and he's got a dental dilemma.

5. A Hint Of Calvados
First Broadcast: Wed 18th January 2006
Having moaned to the BBC about falling standards, the writer's offered a job by the beeb.

6. The Operations
First Broadcast: Wed 25th January 2006
Will Ed find inspiration in his suffering, like Orwell and Burgess, or will he just complain from his hospital bed?

Series 3 (2006)

1. The Name-Check
First Broadcast: Fri 15th December 2006
Ed is writing The South Tring Bubble, a radio play about trains for Hemel Sound Radio. The writer stumbles upon the idea of product placement, and is soon making extra cash by putting the names of plumbers, kebab shops and other local establishments into the script.

2. Dad
First Broadcast: Fri 22nd December 2006
Ping gets Ed to write a novel to cash in on the 'violent childhood memoirs' market... but Ed stuggles to fabricate his past. Matters are made worse when his dad comes to stay.

3. Undercover
First Broadcast: Fri 29th December 2006
Ed shaves off his beard to become a secret shopper, but when he starts listening to fellow secret shopper Dave Wang, theimpoverished writer manages to lose his employers their IKEA contract.

4. The Dig
First Broadcast: Fri 5th January 2007
Ed helps out on archaeological dig. He find some old coins but, not realising their value, puts them in a condom machine in expectation of a night of passion with the young female professor running the dig.

5. Murder Most Rewritten
First Broadcast: Fri 12th January 2007
Ed is employed to write the script for a murder mystery weekend.

6. The Libel Action
First Broadcast: Fri 19th January 2007
Jaz Milvane comes up with a money making plan involving Ed.

Series 4 (2007)

1. January The 31st
First Broadcast: Fri 16th November 2007
With reports of his death greatly exaggerated, Ed struggles with the dreaded tax return and surprises the literary world by being alive.

2. Ruth And Reconciliation
First Broadcast: Fri 23rd November 2007
Romance may be in the air for Ed when he offends the daughter of a fellow writer, but will it survive his taking part in a Creative Partnership at the school where she teaches?

3. The Wrong Fleece
First Broadcast: Fri 30th November 2007
Ed has come up with the kind of idea a writer has perhaps once in a lifetime. Unfortunately, he can't remember where he has put it.

4. The Old Boys Network
First Broadcast: Fri 7th December 2007
Ed's fortunes take an upward turn as he is commissioned to write a book about the history of an old and very wealthy schoolfriend's house in France.

5. Role Reversal
First Broadcast: Fri 14th December 2007
After a visit to the doctor Ed is feeling battered by criticism and low in spirits. However, a chance to reverse his fortunes manifests itself in the form of Dave Wang.

6. Trimarans That Pass In The Night
First Broadcast: Fri 21st December 2007
Love is in the air for Ed, but it's far from plain sailing.

Series 5 (2008)

1. The Last Miaow
First Broadcast: Mon 6th October 2008
Ed has rekindled his relationship with fellow author Mary Potter and they are in a record breaking second month of partnership 'bliss'. Elgar, however, is none too
pleased.

2. The CV Of Dorian Gray
First Broadcast: Mon 13th October 2008
It's time for Ed to drag out the old jeans, buy a mobile phone and cut ten years off the CV as the new Head of New Media Development is a genuine 12 year old.

3. Anger Management
First Broadcast: Mon 20th October 2008
After a run-in with the Head of Stakeholder Communications Engagement at a local council meeting, Ed finds himself in anger management classes. Could he turn over a new leaf and become a gentler person?

4. Educating Peter
First Broadcast: Mon 27th October 2008
Jaz yearns to return to the thrilling intimacy of small space work so suggests that Ed revive one of his old stage shows. So it is that Educating Peter finds itself
on stage and Ed finds he has a success on his hands.

5. The Great Escape
First Broadcast: Mon 3rd November 2008
Ed finds himself in gainful employment writing for a local lifestyle magazine when everyone at the agency goes on holiday. There may even be a romantic holiday on the horizon for him.

6. Granddad
First Broadcast: Mon 10th November 2008
Ed is visited by his new grandson, Smile, and is inspired to write a children's book. However, his daughter is not at all impressed with his flat.

Series 6 (2010)

1. The Charterhouse Redemption
First Broadcast: Mon 11th January 2010
Ed is now a happily-retired author. Not only that but he's well fed, warm and happily ensconced in Berkhampstead's premier accommodation of choice for the financially
distressed.

2. Charity Begins Next Door
First Broadcast: Mon 18th January 2010
Ed has a new member in his writing class, and unlike Stan, Olive and Pearl, Clive is actually impressed by Ed's writing portfolio. Thus it is that Ed finds he has a protege who not only wants to emulate his life, but more fortuitously will help him to write a rather dull speech on water shortages in Africa for the agency's charity auction.

3. The Cruise
First Broadcast: Mon 25th January 2010
Ed, surprisingly, has had a brilliant idea for a book and, even more surprisingly, Ping agrees. So when an opportunity arises to go on a cruise with Jaz and the band, Ed takes up the offer in order to find creative reinvigoration at sea.

4. Cheese Cricket
First Broadcast: Mon 1st February 2010
Despite his assumption that somewhere in the vaults of the National Health Service can be found statistics for injuries sustained in the kitchen as a result of the dash to turn the wireless off at 6.30, Ed finds himself a surprise hit when he takes part in a new Radio 4 'topical quiz with a tasty twist'.

5. A Bottle Of Ulterio Motivo
First Broadcast: Mon 8th February 2010
Ed finds himself in the money when he sells most of his possessions to a themed wine bar owned by the lovely Violet Carson.

6. Elgar Writes
First Broadcast: Mon 15th February 2010
While Ed is busily teaching grammar to some clumsy, apostrophe-ridden phishers, Elgar finds fame when he becomes an internet hit with his blog.

Ed Reardon presents his audience with selections from his favourite prose and poetry; all, of course, written by himself. Recorded at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Series 7 (2011)

1. In The Current Climate
First Broadcast: Mon 10th January 2011
Austerity has hit hard, but Ed's prospects are looking good as he's working on a book with the brief to make penury both cool and hot simultaneously.

2. From Bean To Cup
First Broadcast: Mon 17th January 2011
Ed finds himself working on a corporate video with old sparring partner Jaz Milvane and Oscar-winning producer Heidi Fisher.

3. Become A Successful Writer
First Broadcast: Mon 24th January 2011
Following a forced attendance at a writing course, Ed decides to set up his own 'Script Doctor' service and at £25 per script, it's Burgundy all round.

4. Parsnip Junction
First Broadcast: Mon 31st January 2011
Thanks to some sibling rivalry between Ping and her sister Py, Ed finds himself reinventing the much-loved children's classic Parsnip Junction.

5. Writer In Residence
First Broadcast: Mon 7th February 2011
Due to an unexpected turn of events and a little help from his daughter, Ed finds himself ensconced as the newest writer in residence at a 'Uni-collegy'.

6. Summer Of '76
First Broadcast: Mon 14th February 2011
Ed finds himself befriended online by an old flame. Should he renew the acquaintance or leave well enough alone?

Series 8 (2012)

1. Have A Great Weekend
First Broadcast: Tue 3rd April 2012
As we renew our acquaintance with Ed we find him in a somewhat lighter mood, enjoying normal weekend-ish type things, like having a bath, and whistling.
He's also visiting the DIY store - because he can.

2. Original British Drama
First Broadcast: Tue 10th April 2012
Following one of his numerous pithy letters of complaint to the BBC, Ed finds himself doing some research for his son, Jake, the only family member left representing the name of 'Reardon' working in the media.

3. It's A Nude Nude Nude Nude World
First Broadcast: Tue 17th April 2012
Jaz Milvain asks Ed to curate a moving tribute to him and his work in film for the 'surprise' party that he is organising for his 60th birthday.

4. Making A Difference
First Broadcast: Tue 24th April 2012
Ed finds himself an unlikely star of local radio when he decides to try and make a difference to the rail network.

5. Rosicrucian Armageddon 2
First Broadcast: Tue 1st May 2012
Ed's daughter Eli arrives to stay, complete with son and dream catcher, whilst Ed is trying to write authentic 'oldenspeak' for the gaming sensation

6. Keeping The Flame Alive

With the Olympics looming Stan spies a golden opportunity - renting out Ed's flat for the duration of the games at the princely sum of £3,000 a week.
So Ed has to pack up his newspaper collection, sift through his takeaway trays and leave the place he's called home for the last years. But where will he go?

Ed starts applying for real jobs to try to get back into ex-girlfriend Fiona's good books.

Ed finds himself the oldest intern in town and sharing an office with Ping.

3. The Berkhamstead Job
First Broadcast: Mon 25th November 2013
Ed finds himself writing a script for Jaz Milvain's latest film.

4. Blood of the Reardons
First Broadcast: Mon 2nd December 2013
To escape his daughter's gluten-free falafel salad, Ed enrols on a clinical trial.

5. Intellectual Fireworks
First Broadcast: Mon 9th December 2013
Ed takes up a professorship at a prestigious writing retreat.

6. The Bride of Auntie
First Broadcast: Mon 16th December 2013
Ed finally becomes a contestant on the Radio 4 seminal quiz What Do You Know?
