Default TomTom Vs Garmin

TomTom vs Garmin

Generall I prefer Garmin over TomTom in the US. Garmin picks better routes (faster and more convenient) and gives more detailed instructions. It tells you whether the address is on the left or the right side of the road, which is not always easy to figure out at night, in busy areas.

Try yahoo maps and you'll get a sense of what you get with Garmin. TomTom gets you "there" to the road location, but you have to do the rest of the looking. The best way is to go to a store with many GPS models on display. Enter a few addresses that you are familiar with, and see how different brands will pick different routes, and decide which is better.

For me Garmin is better but I don't know if it's $100 better. This also depends on where you often go the most. If it's a low density area, the exact direction might not matter. But if you often go to hard-to-find crowded areas, that could be a big help.

The Garmin nuvi 250 (I think that's what you meant, not NuV1250) doesn't have a feature called text-to-speech, which allows the GPS to tell you the street name. Instead of saying "Turn left in 200 ft", it'll say "Turn left on ABC street in 200 ft". I like that, but the nuvi 250 doesn't have it (nor does the TomTom One 3rd ed). It also does not come with a AC charger or USB cable, which are not absolutely necessary, but many people might want and have to buy later.

To get all of that (text-to-speech, AC charger and USB cable) you'd have to move up to the nuvi 350 or 360, but that's more money. Just something to think about before you buy.

I think it is quite complicated task to decide which is the best gps device for you. It depends on the application you want to use the device for. There are wide spread applications of both TomTom and Garmin GPS devices.

It is a fact that the industry leader in Europe, TomTom, Garmin successfully captured while in the U.S. markets. 50% of GPS devices sold in the United States, the manufacturer Garmin. The reason for the popularity of Garmin in the U.S. is that they have more models to choose from at more price points

TomTom units are not less desirable. The majority of all units have a touch screen bright and clear sounding speakers. They have enough internal memory and expansion slots for SD cards.
