SiteMaps - How Important in SEO?

Quick question. How important are sitemaps in SEO? The jury seems to be out but it's such a small job that it seems worth doing. Any thoughts?

I don't think the jury is out. Sitemaps have clear benefits because they help search engines to find pages that may not otherwise be crawled. If you have a unique page that is not indexed then submitting it via a sitemap usually works.

Good SEO is about doing lots of little things that are all worthwhile and collectively contribute towards a well-optimised website. A sitemap is one of those things and there is no reason to omit it because as you say it is such a small job.
