The New World Spanish-English and English-Spanish Dictionary

American bilingual lexicography is gradually pulling itself
away from its traditional dependence upon Britain. While it
is still fairly common practice for American publishing houses
to reprint British works when dealing with the old cultural
languages, with or without revision and adaptation to Ameri-
can use, Americans are beginning, particularly for those new
languages whose study has become widespread within the last
half-century (notably Spanish and Russian), to strike out for
themselves and offer works that reflect not merely present
colloquial usage in both English and foreign language, but
also the specific usage of the United States and of that foreign-
language area with which they are in closest contact.

The present work has been under way for the better part of
ten years. It embodies the most recent methodological findings
of linguistic science. combined with the highest utilitarian 3
principles. It contains an estimated 70,000 entries, more than
any comparable dictionary. There is a built-in principle of I
selective labeling of meanings that removes all doubt as to
which one of various possible Spanish equivalents best fits the
meaning of an English word in a given context. Full pronun-
ciation, in International Phonetic Alphabet transcription, is 1
given for all words in both languages. Prefixes and suffixes are
fully defined in the text. Idiomatic phrases and expressions
are likewise included in the text, and listed under the key 3
word with their exact and usable equivalents on the same
level of diction. The typography is designed to help, not to
hinder, the reader. A separate condensation of grammar and
irregularities does not always overcome the stumbling block
of inflectional forms that deviate from the normal pattern.
Hence the reader will welcome the appearance of irregular
forms in the text itself, providing immediate guidance in their
recognition and use.
