Jack McDevitt - Firebird Unabridged

When I think the science-fiction genre, I conjure up images of all the covers of the paperbacks displaying alien women in tight clothing and men with obscene amounts of muscle wielding a variety of weapons.
I have this image in my mind of space-travel books either being completely unrealistic in their depictions (particularly of aliens, which despite several million years of independent evolution seem to be capable of carrying on wild romances with humans) or as being so philosophical that they are dry and difficult to get through.
To me, what is different about Jack McDevitt's Alex Benedict series, of which Firebird is the sixth book, is the way McDevitt combines philosophy and a thoughtful view of the future with adventure.
