2008: Console Showdown - PS3 vs. Wii vs. 360

Okay, you've read [Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...], probably joined in the colourful and free exchange of thoughts in the IGN forums, and now you're back for a second helping of IGN AU's unique brand of bittersweet insight and stinging commentary. In this, Part 2 of our Console Showdown, we're looking at genres - or more specifically, which console had the best showing for each of the major genres.

We've listed our top three titles for each genre (using an Olympics-inspired system), as well as which console won the genre overall - based on the top three and any other decent games within that genre. We've sorted the games as logically as we can, but genres are pretty fluid in videogames these days, so it's not perfect. But hey, pobody's nerfect, right?

How did we decide on the order of winners? We've used IGN's review scores as our baseline, with a smattering of subjective opinion on how we feel about the titles now. We've also included a paragraph discussing the choice of overall console winner for each genre, so you know where we're coming from.

Hopefully you'll be able to take a look at this feature and get a good feel for which console was strongest in 2008 in the genres of your choice. Before getting stuck into it, however, a handful of qualifying statements:

• Once again, we're just looking at full retail releases here - no downloadable titles (that Showdown comes early next week).
• Where a game received different scores on different platforms (provided it's the same basic game - we won't be listing FIFA 09 on PS3/360 and FIFA: All-Play on Wii together, for instance), we've included both scores.
• We're not listing whether there are PC versions of any of the games - this is a console showdown!

SURVIVAL HORROR

Dead Space and Condemned 2 are both available on 360 and PS3, so it's the stellar Siren: Blood Curse (available at retail in Australia) that pushes the PS3 ahead in this category for 2008. There really isn't another game available right now quite like Siren: Blood Curse, and if you want to experience the most this genre has to offer this year, the PS3 takes the proverbial cake. The year's undisputed overall winner, Dead Space, refreshes the traditions of the genre with a brilliant and claustrophobic space setting and some fantastic twists on run-and-gun gameplay. The X and Y-axis aiming and punishing foes still leave us whimpering in the corner while secretly wanting more.

The platforming genre has undergone a bit of resurgence in creativity during 2008, thanks to some great new entries in the market – de Blob and LittleBigPlanet, two games that really push the gameplay clich?s into new areas. However, the Wii stands out as the system to own for exclusive platformers in 2008; a new Wario Land entry proved to be delightfully old school and compelling, and de Blob is an essential purchase. The winner in this category, however, is LittleBigPlanet – a game of deceptively simple gameplay but rich and deep content creation tools. While the PS3 didn't quite have the number of platformers on it to beat off the Wii, LBP is a platforming darling.




SHOOTER

There were an incredible number of shooters released in '08 – a new Call of Duty, Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, Unreal Tournament III, Battlefield: Bad Company, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, The Club and more. While the PS3 and 360 both share the bulk of these titles between them, the Xbox 360 edges out the PS3 in the shooter category with two top-ranking titles – Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead. Gears 2 needs almost no introduction; it's as consistently excellent as the first game and then some. But the real standout shooter this year was Left 4 Dead, narrowly beating out the stellar Resistance 2 for gold (based on the unequivocal agreement on L4D between territories) and pushing the 360 ahead in the top-tier of shooters.




MISCELLANEOUS

Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure: Wii

Miscellaneous. Now there's a category that's perfectly suited to one particular console – the Wii. There were a few titles that were almost impossible to categorise into traditional genres and all of these found their homes on the Wii. This category is a clean-sweep for Nintendo, with Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure topping the list with its fantastic blend of puzzle-solving, creativity and charm. For sheer inventiveness, Endless Ocean earns silver – and really needs to be played to be appreciated. Disaster: Day of Crisis tackles elements of action, RPG, platforming, shooting and even simulation – and it does so in style, earning bronze. If you want the platform with the weirdest, most unique retail titles in 2008, the Wii is your machine.

This is a peculiar category, since these games are traditionally bundled into 'action/adventure'. However, we think that games like GTA IV, Saints Row II and Mercs 2 stand away from the crowd in terms of structure and presentation enough to warrant their own category. The Wii's Animal Crossing game actually fits this category, too – though, we don't think it particularly warrants a whole lot of praise. Grand Theft Auto IV, on the other hand, does - and we're giving it the gold, followed at a fair distance by Saints Row 2 and Mercenaries 2. Both PS3 and 360 received all three of these top-ranking open world games, and therefore this category is tied between the two.




FAMILY

The genre we're going to label as 'family' has blossomed in 2008, thanks to a concerted effort from all three first-party companies to attract more all-ages content to their systems. That said, the Wii and PS3 had the most success, particularly with Sony's Buzz! series of quiz games, which was scored tremendously well by our US office. The LEGO spin-off games continued to excel, with LEGO Indy making great headway on all three platforms. Boom Blox brings it home on Wii, tying the score with PS3. Both the Wii and PS3 have proven they're family focused with high-quality releases outweighing those on 360.




ACTION/ADVENTURE

Prince of Persia: PS3, Xbox 360

Prince of Persia reset our expectations and understanding of the series with an outing that was excellently paced and gorgeous to boot – truly fulfilling the requirements of the genre. Mirror's Edge came in second for its innovation, immersion and sheer impact on the industry. Finally, the Wii version of Okami is a pretty decent port of a wondrous game, and a must-buy for Wii owners who never experienced it on PS2. Another tightly contested category, ultimately won by both 360 and PS3; both consoles were home to the two best games.




ACTION

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: PS3

While all three consoles had plenty of action games for more mature players, Metal Gear Solid 4 stands above all others. This game takes cues from past entries in the series and refines them, polishing its presentation into a stunning example of what games are capable of when talent and vision is combined with raw technical skill. And, to the delight of PS3 owners, it's still exclusive. However, 360 and PS3 owners could share in DMC4, while Wii owners got Suda 51's brilliant No More Heroes – so everyone should be happy this time around. On raw numbers though, the PS3 takes this category. MGS4 + DMC4 = WIN.

Another very close call between PS3 and 360 in the action RPG category. Fallout 3 is available on both systems and is easily one of the games of the year, thanks to its compelling post-apocalyptic world and incredible depth. Coming in at second and third are Lionhead's Xbox 360 exclusive Fable II and SEGA's PS3 exclusive Valkyria Chronicles. They're both brilliant titles in their own rights, and both do interesting new things with the genre, but if we could only play one we'd go with Fable II, which is why the 360 gets the nod (albeit by a slim margin) in this category.

2008 was a bit of a ho-hum year for traditional console RPGs. Sure, Eternal Sonata came out on PS3, but it was on 360 the year before, so that's just leveling the playing field. Both the other straight-up RPGs of 2008 were Xbox 360 exclusives, however, so while neither Tales of Vesperia or Lost Odyssey really blew our skirts up (if we wore skirts – which we do), the Xbox 360 wins the category. It's a bit of a hollow victory, but at least Microsoft has been aggressively trying to cover the genre off… even if it hasn't been as critically successful as it may have liked.

Fans of music games really are spoiled for choice right now. 2008 saw both Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band (finally) hit all three consoles, and while there are a few differences between SKUs, you're not going to be significantly handicapped depending on which console you own. In fact, Wii fans were stoked when World Tour on their system of choice hit with a great unique mode (Mii Freestyle), properly integrated online and – provided you have a decent size SD card – proper DLC support. Why, then, does PS3 win the category? Well, it only wins by a nose, and that's based on SingStar – this year saw Vol. 2, Vol. 3 and SingStar ABBA hit stores. Even without factoring in DLC, that's a lot of karaoke for those inclined. Lips on 360, meanwhile, was a disappointment in terms of features, despite offering up a good party package. The less said about Boogie Superstar on Wii the better.

The sports category is – unsurprisingly – one of the largest, and we had a pretty massive list of contenders for the top games list. So while a PS3 exclusive title took out the gold, we feel that the breadth of good titles on all three systems really balances out the handful of system exclusive titles. Games like FIFA 09, Pro Evo 2009, NHL 09, Top Spin 3, Madden, NBA 2K9, Shaun White and Tiger Woods are obviously very similar on PS3 and 360, while many of the Wii versions of the big sport franchises are really coming along. Pro Evo, Tiger Woods and Madden were all really solid on Wii, while Shaun White was arguably better on Wii than on PS3/360, and Skate It turned out really well too. We're going to qualify this tie, however, by saying that Wii owners still have to be very careful in their purchasing decisions. A whole lot of sports drek gets released on Wii, and we're not just talking about games like Big Beach Sports. Some of the big franchises are still really struggling too – FIFA 09 and NBA Live 09 we're looking at you.

Not one racing title cracked the 9/10 barrier in 2008, making this year a bit of a disappointment for racing fans. Even so, there were some very solid titles for PS3 and 360 owners. Midnight Club: LA was slick and fast, Pure balanced over-the-top tricks with jaw dropping vistas, Race Driver: Grid was smooth and stylish, and Burnout Paradise proved to be an interesting shift for the Burnout series. In terms of exclusives, however, the Xbox 360 didn't really have much to offer, while the PS3 had MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The winner, then, is the PS3. Oh, and the Wii only had one racing title of note – Mario Kart Wii.

Let's be honest, while real-time strategy games have made considerable headway on home consoles over the last few years, PC is still the genre's home. And while turn-based strategy games have huge audiences amongst console gamers, that's also a genre that seems to bear more fruit on handheld these days. So where does that leave the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360? With very few games of note in 2008, that's where. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution was the clear stand-out, offering a cleverly weighted console take on the classic series, while Tom Clancy's EndWar brought voice control to the RTS table in a major way. Both those games are available for PS3 and 360, hence the two-way tie. Sadly, the better-later-than-never release of Battalion Wars 2 in Australia wasn't enough to lift the Wii into contention.

Hooray! A victory for the Wii, and a clear one at that! In terms of retail releases, Super Smash Bros. Brawl was the best fighting game of 2008 by a decent margin, packing in an incredible selection of characters and mechanics with both accessibility and depth. The fact that it's a four player title also makes it – like its forebears – a great party game. SoulCalibur IV is no slouch either, giving PS3 and Xbox 360 owners a fighting game to crow about… even if Darth Vader and Yoda were split between the systems. And then there's Smackdown, which proved to be a competent – if not spectacular – game on all three console SKUs. Castlevania Judgment is also worth mentioning as a further addition to the Wii fighting game lineup.





So that's our medal tally. While the PS3 - again - comes out on top in terms of the games of 2008, that's from a viewpoint of treating all genres equally. The reality is, of course, that you'll be far more interested in some genres than others, so they're the areas you should pay attention to.
