Bird flu: Four deaths confirmed in China

Four deaths have been confirmed due to bird flu so far. According to the China Health Ministry, a 29-year old man has been diagnosed with bird flu and is in critical condition in southwest China.

The Ministry of Health said the man, surnamed Zhou, fell ill on Jan. 15 in Guiyang city and was diagnosed with H5N1 strain of bird flu eight days later.
It said the health department of Guizhou province is “making all-out efforts” to save him, under the guidance of experts from the Ministry of Health.
The man had been exposed to live poultry markets before he got sick, the ministry said.
A woman in China’s far west died Friday from bird flu, the fourth death this month, just as millions of people are on the move to return home for the traditional Lunar New Year.
According to the World Health Organization, bird flu has killed 252 people worldwide since 2003, including 23 in China.
