If I had my time at medical school again, I would do things a little differently. One of those things, apart from treating my liver with a little more respect, would have been to put a lot more time and effort into the study of pathology. Pathology certainly wasn't as sexy, at the time, as some of the other clinical sciences such as cramming to learn muscle insertions and origins or memorising the Henderson Hasselbalch equation, but in retrospect, the study of pathology could have answered a lot of my unanswered questions. I recommend this point strongly to anybody in his or her pre-clinical years. Pathology, in its translated form is the study of disease. It underpins how dysfunctional processes within the body cause sickness and despair in patients, from the cellular level to the level of the organ system. From a good understanding of basic pathology, so many questions regarding the why's and how's of clinical medicine can be answered. However there are still many unanswered questions.

Pathology is one of the fastest growing studies in Medicine. Current knowledge is growing at an exponential rate, particularly in the exciting field of molecular and genetic medicine. Thus it is important that as medical students, we be kept up to date with the latest research and ground breaking discoveries. The Robbins and Cotran collection of textbooks, including Pathologic Basis of Disease, Companion to Pathologic Basis of Disease, Basic Pathology and Pathology Flashcards, all strive to allow students to gain a comprehensive and practical knowledge in the field of pathology. But for the time-consumed and highly strung medical student, the intimidatingly hefty Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, can seem like an insurmountable task.
