Someplace Strange (2014)

have been told by many comic fans with impeccable taste that Peyo is one of the all-time greats-a European all-ages comic artist whose name deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Jacobs, Goscinny, and De Bevere. But every time I sit down to read some of it, I am immediately distracted-to the point of frustration-by the dialogue. If only they'd quit saying "SMURF" as any form of speech that strikes Peyo or his smirking translator's fancy.

I end up setting the book aside to try it again before the Second Smurfing Coming. I mention this because of Dark Horse's re-release of yet another Epic GN from the late '80s. Someplace Strange was written by Ann Nocenti and drawn and colored by the immensely talented artist John Bolton. At the time of its original release, Bolton was a rising star-thanks especially to his collaboration with Chris Claremont on Marada, the She-Wolf. Bolton's artwork resembles the style of '50s illustrators more than the Caniff or Adams or Barry schools of comic art. Nocenti was a rising star. Her name on a title suggested a mature and intelligent take on whatever she wrote or edited.
